Three Move Quiz

The PDF books can be found here.

The basic idea of this quiz game is to guess the best move. The wrinkle is that you pick three moves and rank them. If your top move is the one selected by Fat Fritz, you get 3 points, if its one of your other two moves, you get 1 point. If none of your moves match the recommended one, you get 0 points.

The advantage of this game is that you don't become fixated on one move, but really start considering and evaluating multiple candidate moves.

Here is an example position:

Position 1

Joseph August Polak v Gerard Oskam, VAS-NRSV, 1940.02.11

White to move. Rank your top three moves. Solution on next page.

(page break here)

If your top move choice matches Fat Fritz's, give yourself 3 points. If one of your other two choices matches, give yourself 1 point. Otherwise no points.

Fat Fritz: 37. Qxc3 Bxc3 38. Kg4 h6 39. g6 f6 (1.35)

SF11: 37. Qxc3 Bxc3 38. Kg4 Rd7 39. Rc1 Bd4 (1.04)

Joseph August Polak: 37. Qxc3 Bxc3 38. Kg4 Kg8 39. e5 Kf8

Stockfish and player variations are also provided.

Set a timer for, say, 10 minutes per position. Play it with a friend or by yourself. You can also make up your own rules. Most of all, have fun.

Software Used

The software used is

  • lc0.23.2 with Fat Fritz v471 running on a RTX 2070 (newest Kiudee settings)
  • Stockfish 11 running on 8 cores of a Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8750H CPU @ 2.20GHz
  • Each engine is run for 15 seconds per position

Why Fat Fritz?

Isn't Leela network X stronger? The truth is there isn't much difference between the playing strength of the best neural networks. What distinguishes them, in my opinion, is how well they deal with certain openings and how useful their advice is for human players. In my experience, the Leela networks have definite weaknesses in certain openings, while Fat Fritz is more well rounded. Ultimately you'll have to decided for yourself if the recommended moves are useful.
