OpenSCAD

OpenSCAD is code based 3D modelling software, popular among 3D printing enthusiasts. It is easy to learn and have excellent Cheat Sheet to start modelling quickly. Remember that all numbers are interpreted as millimeters when exported into STL.

OnShape

Best web-based 3D modelling tool, created by one of SolidWorks developers. OnShape web site contain numerous example projects and video tutorials. We already created teams and projects for Your 3D models. Feel free to use mentioned tool.

Typical modelling workflow for ROS

Any 3D modelling software store projects in own formats. STL data format is used for data exchange between modelling software and ROS projects. We propose to use OpenSCAD and OnShape programs to create models for ROS projects. Export them to STL format and upload into github of Your team/project. Students, who are using OpenSCAD for 3D modelling, should upload both *.scad and *.STL files. Later STL files will be used in Gazebo for environment modelling and for description of custom robot parts in urdf format.
