Interactive map of Revolutionary postcards
The research goals of the Digital Humanities project are systematization of postcards to search for ancestors and displaying postcards on a map with a timeline for interpreting postcards as a source of cultural and historical information. The project promotes educational, cultural and tourism activities related to the events of the February and October revolutions of 1917-1918 that took place in Petrograd.
261 postcards, mostly sent during the 1917 Revolution in Russia, were found and provided in digital form by Maria Tychilina, an employee of the Mayakovsky Library. Maria is engaged in genealogical research. For genealogical research, postcards, organized and presented on an interactive map with a timeline, are a source of genealogical information.
As a conclusion of the implementation of the scientific project, we can highlight the achieved results:
- Processing and cleaning of the received data was carried out, the data was brought to a single format and converted for automatic loading into the database.
- The database of postcards is formed in the platform for digital online collections Omeka.
- A technological solution has been developed for installing a web resource in the LAMP web server infrastructure (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP).
- A technological solution has been developed to host the web server infrastructure on cloud computing services - Amazon Web Services.
- A map of Petrograd of 1917 was found and digitized in high resolution, geo-referenced to the actual map of St. Petersburg.
- A technological solution has been found for displaying a map of Petrograd with geotags and filtering objects using the timeline.
- A domain name was assigned to a digital exhibition with an interactive map, a web resource was published on the Internet. If we talk about the future of the project, then it is the first exhibition containing 281 postcard objects and a map of Petrograd. The platform and servers allow you to create even more exhibitions, add new maps, filter objects by period. Students, employees of educational institutions, cultural and art workers have a tool for creating their own digital collections of historical and cultural value. Anyone has the opportunity to explore and interact with the digital exhibition.
