Honestly this is an optimisation and not even sure it's worth the complication - a bunch of additional steps and a https://github.com/solana-labs/solana-web3.js/blob/master/scripts/get-latest-validator-release-version.sh. Closing without merging. If we change our mind the code is in the branch.
