This is backwards compatible, considering the type var will default to Any (as it is currently).

Checklist:

  • Add tests that demonstrate the correct behavior of the change. Tests should fail without the change.
  • Add or update relevant docs, in the docs folder and in code.
  • Add an entry in CHANGES.rst summarizing the change and linking to the issue.
  • Add .. versionchanged:: entries in any relevant code docs.
  • Run pre-commit hooks and fix any issues.
  • Run pytest and tox, no tests failed.

I gave this a quick shot, see my commit. I don't think this is feasible to implement in a convenient manner. I feel like you might have come across similar issues. I'll close this for now. If anyone has a good implementation PoC, feel free to create a new PR.
