How to insert attributes and or new html elements in each part of a equation

Hello, excuse me if the question is so naive. I would like to render a equation, and after that link each part of the equation to a diferent hyperlink... so, for example after rendering x = a + b, I would like to be able to link each part of the equation to a hyperlink x, =, a, + and b, inserting an "a" tag or any other html tag to them, and more over I would like to be able to change each individual behaviour of these tags, like changing color, size or position?

Could that be done? Sorry if it is a very basic question, and thank you very much in advance! It is a very great job what you have done.
