Feature Idea

This epic aims to create a comprehensive keyboard interaction system for Jan that enhances productivity while maintaining flexibility and user control.

Problem Statement

Current keyboard interactions in Jan have several limitations:

  • Users cannot disable/customize keyboard shortcuts that may conflict with other applications
  • Navigation between threads and messages is limited
  • No centralized command palette for discovering and executing actions
  • Lack of visual feedback for available keyboard shortcuts

Proposed Solution Components

1. Shortcut Management System

  • Global toggle to enable/disable all shortcuts
  • Granular control to customize individual shortcuts
  • Conflict detection and warning system
  • Settings UI under Settings > Keyboard Shortcuts

2. Command Palette

  • Accessible via Ctrl/Cmd + K
  • Searchable interface for all available actions
  • Visual display of keyboard shortcuts
  • Categories for different types of actions:
    • Thread management
    • Message operations
    • Navigation
    • System controls
  • Customizable bindings
  • ...

3. Enhanced Navigation Controls

  • Thread navigation:
    • Next/previous thread
    • Thread history
  • Message navigation:
    • Next/previous message
    • Message editing/regeneration
    • Copy/delete operations
  • Visual indicators for keyboard focus
