There is an issue with Typescript 5.7.2 running in Node 20+. We were getting

SyntaxError: Cannot use import statement outside a module

The workaround was to set the package to type: module but then we get a new error:

TypeError: Unknown file extension ".ts"

This appears to be because ts-node does not yet support the way TypeScript now handles module resolution. A related issue offered the solution used here: TypeStrong/ts-node#1997 (comment)
