NullBytes appearing in strings

I noticed recently that null bytes are appear in strings from objects decoded and encoded with gojay.
Example:

What would cause Gojay to write in a null byte like that, also can we get gojay to remove null bytes from strings?

Having dug some more I believe the issue is within this function

Something is causing the default case to be hit.

Why purposely add the string representation of a null byte into the string (control 0)?
