Why are my video files not being found?

Sometimes you may encounter cases where Mizuu doesn't find some of your video files - and there's almost always a good reason for this.

This document is designed to help you identify any potential causes and help you solve them. Without any further ado, let's get started with the potential causes!

File size

Mizuu does not - by default - include any video files less than 50 MB in file size. This is a restriction that helps remove unwanted video files in most scenarios, but it might cause trouble in some cases, especially when dealing with anime episodes and similar.

This file size limitation can be disabled completely or altered to a higher threshold (up to 500 MB in increments of 50 MB). Simply go to Settings > Identification & search > Set file size limit.

File format

Mizuu only looks for certain file formats and any unrecognized file formats are ignored. You can find a complete list of supported file formats here.

Ignored filename tags

Mizuu can be set up to ignore user-defined "tags" in filenames. If you spot certain patterns emerge in how Mizuu deals with filenames, it might be worth checking if you've entered any "ignore tags" by mistake.

Sub-folder searching

Mizuu searches sub-folders of selected file source folders by default, but this can be disabled. If disabled, Mizuu will likely miss a lot of your video files.

Previously removed files

In some cases, it might be useful to let Mizuu keep track of files you've previously removed from your library. This is useful for when you don't want files to be re-added when the library update runs.

If you've set up Mizuu to keep track of previously removed files, you might want to check out the list of removed files - and make sure that your missing video files aren't on it.

Adult filter

Mizuu attempts not to match your video files with any adult content, and it additionally filters video content based on the title in order to comply with Google Play content policies. This means that some titles might not get identified correctly because the adult filter "catches" it.

Examples of this would be perfectly valid titles like "Sex Tape (2014)" or "Hancock (2008). Both would not be able to get identified by default due to the adult filter, so if Mizuu fails to identify those files, please disable the adult filter and try again.

My apologies on having to add the adult filter, but sadly that's the only way to comply with Google's content policies.

Incorrect use of filename conventions

Mizuu expects certain filename conventions when identifying movies and TV shows. If these expectations aren't met, it won't be able to identify the video files correctly, and you may end up with content that's identified incorrectly or unidentified content.

Please see the links below for an overview of filename conventions:

If a file cannot be identified based on its filename, Mizuu attempts to identify it based on the parent folder name. If you have many incorrectly named files in the same folder, you'll usually end up with a single movie that has a lot of files mapped to it.

Unidentifiable content

If Mizuu finds a video file that cannot be matched against any movie or TV show in the respective databases, the video file will be added as an unidentified file. You won't be able to play unidentified video files, but you are able to manually override the identification.
