Should these test that the output contains stderr/stdout separately, rather than in the specific order? Although I'm a bit surprised stderr comes before stdout given that the code is

This is still necessary on master (but tests are also failing....)

This all seems fine, I "fixed" the race-y test by adding a sleep 1 in between printing to stdout and stderr. Since we just have multiple tasks reading lines from their respective streams (stdout and stderr in this case) we can't really guarantee that one will be read before the other, despite one being written to before the other; it's not a locking issue, it's a scheduling uncertainty issue. Therefore, let's just use sleep 1 to make this race as unambiguous as possible.
