Upgrade your Canute 360 to the latest software
You will need a blank SD card or USB stick, a desktop or laptop PC, and your Canute on stand-by.
Please only apply this upgrade to a Canute that is already running at version 1.3.19 or higher. You can find the current version you are running by going into the 'system menu' in the Canute. Are you running a version older than 1.3.19? You can find the v1.3.19 upgrade here: https://bristolbraille.org/upgrades/20200204_canute_360_upgrade.zip. Are you running a version older than 1.3.14? Contact us and we will supply you with the correct upgrade.
Please apply this upgrade to one machine first (to test whether it works) before rolling it out to any others.
If in any doubt email [email protected] or phone +44 (0)117 325 3022.
This upgrade:
- reduces noisy initial reset by pre-heating motors
- improves temperature management
- includes updates to underlying OS and libraries
- fixes some incremental braille errors that were occuring during use
After you have applied this upgrade your Canute will be on version 2.4.0.
It also includes the following changes from previous version 2 upgrades:
- provides German language options
- adds a 'change BRF encoding' option to the System Menu allowing use of Eurobraille (as well as Braille ASCII)
- changes the behaviour of the rear power off button to take you to the system menu which has a shutdown option
- adds an "install upgrade" option to the system menu rather than running an installation automatically
- includes general updates to the underlying operating system
- has slight graphical changes to the HDMI output to align alphanumeric font with braille characters
- makes holding forward/back more predictable for short durations
- supports SD cards or USB sticks with a large number of braille files (over 6,000)
- shows directory folders containing braille content in a new library tree view
- will remember the current book when just using a USB stick (previously an SD card was needed)
- uses a different sampling average for more consistent temperature management
- reduces noise slightly in normal use through motor controller improvements
- will shutdown when USB B connection is unplugged, if successfully used in display mode
- includes general updates to the underlying operating system and code frameworks
- fixes capitalisation of LIBRARY menu title
- defaults to using 5mm motor firmware
- fixes issue that makes SD card slot unavailable if upgrade run from USB media
Download canute-os-upgrade-2.4.0.zip from the Download Canute OS page.
List of files to extract from the zip:
- 'README.txt'
- 'boot-v2.4.0.tar.xz'
- 'system-v2.4.0.squashfs'
- 'sysupgrade.sh'
If you are unsure how to extract files from a zip please see these instructions: https://www.wikihow.tech/Extract-Zip-Files
Download the zip file above to your local PC.
Extract all four files from the zip, titled 'README.txt', 'boot-v2.4.0.tar.xz', 'system-v2.4.0.squashfs' and 'sysupgrade.sh' (total of ~725MB).
Copy all these files onto an empty FAT32 formatted USB stick or SD card ("the medium"), not FAT16, exFAT or any other format. If in doubt use a small-volume USB stick as these are most likely to be formatted as FAT32. If using an SD card you then you can use SD or SDHC, but not SDXC or SDUC.
Ensure your Canute 360 is turned off.
Put the medium in the Canute. If using an SD card be sure to put it in the correct way, which is with the connectors facing up and towards the Canute.
Turn it on using the switch at the back.
If upgrading from version 2.2.0 or earlier then the Canute will now go through the upgrade procedure.
If upgrading from version 2.3.0 or later then the Canute will start up as normal. Wait until it has completed starting up and then press the power switch at the back again. This will take you to the System Menu. Select Button 7 to start the upgrade.
The upgrade procedure should take around twenty minutes, but if it takes longer let it run to at least forty minutes to make sure.
The Canute will display messages informing you of upgrade progress. If you do not get an initial message on the top line of the display within a few minutes the upgrade is not running.
Once it is done you will be instructed by a message that the install is complete and the Canute will then turn off.
Turn the Canute back on again. It will take a further three minutes to start up the first time after an upgrade, after which it can be used as normal.
Once it is done please put the medium back in your PC and copy the new log file (called 'sysupgrade.log') to your desktop for safe keeping. It may be useful if there is a problem with your Canute later.
Now you can delete the following files from the medium:
- 'README.txt'
- 'boot-v2.4.0.tar.xz'
- 'system-v2.4.0.squashfs'
- 'sysupgrade.sh'
If this upgrade doesn't work as expected please follow the alternative 'version 1.3.19' link on bristolbraille.org/fw which will roll you back to v1.3.19.
Follow the steps above until the point you turn the Canute on using the switch at the back the first time. The Canute will start up as normal.
Wait until it has completed start up and then press the power switch at the back again. This will take you to the System Menu.
Select Button 7 to start the upgrade. The Canute will now go through the upgrade procedure.
