Detect common issues to report them more obviously

Currently this is two things:

• Compiler getting killed by the OOM killer
• Compiler failing due to lack of space

Such failures often aren't obvious to the user, and wouldn't be very hard to detect by checking dmesg and disk space. The builder would then report a far more obvious error to the user.
