Preview image in external program

Is there a command to open the image attachment in an external program without downloading it?

My workaround is to set dirs.downloads to a folder that gets cleared on reboot. In the rare case that I actually want to download something, I just use :download <path> or move the file out of the iamb download directory.

That works, but I'm lazy to set up such a directory that clears itself on reboot.

Would it be possible to for example spawn a program by name and pipe the image to it? I know that feh, for example. Or having a temporary file would work but then how we implement file clean up becomes a question to ponder on.

What do you think about piping the image to a viewer?

iamb uses the open command for opening all files and not just images. If no command is specified, it defaults to open which only supports file paths (as does xdg-open on linux).

I think adding this would be too much complexity for too little gain.

If you are on linux, you can use /run/user/<uid>. That should be a tempfs that is cleared on reboot.
