Inconsistent behavior of "date" filter with locales

The | date filter localizes some inputs, but not others.

Here is an example :

{{ "now" | date("l d F") }}
{{ d.today | date("l d F") }} {# d.today contains "new DateTime()" #}

This outputs :

Thursday 23 May Jeudi 23 Mai

Environment :

• Arch Linux
  • LANG=en_US.UTF-8
  • LC_TIME = fr_FR.UTF-8
• PHP 8.3.7
  • php-intl enabled
  • intl.default_locale not set
• Twig 3.10.3
  • intl-extra not installed

Is this an expected behavior ? And if it is, on what kind of inputs can I trust the filter to localize ?

@fabpot since you moved this to a discussion, can you please explain if this is an expected behaviour and the logic behind the choice between french and English formatting here? The other language implementations need to honour this behaviour.

I don't really understand this switch to a discussion either. Even if nothing can be done about it because of whatever function is used under the hood, it's still a very disturbing behavior. I think this requires at least an action to explain it in the documentation.

Are you sure that d is an object of PHP's core DateTime class?

This method does not use locales. All output is in English.

This is what is stated in the documentation of the format() method which is used by the date filter. Could it be that your application uses a different implementation that comes with a locale-aware format() method?

I was, but now that I'm trying to reproduce it on a simple example to share the full code with you... I can't.

Maybe I accidentally included a different DateTime class from a dependency and didn't realize it. 🤔
