Connect two items enclosed in different containers

Is it possible to connect item1 and item2 somehow in this case?

[container1|
    [item1]
]

[container2|
    [item2]
]

Whatever I tried I cannot. If it's not possible, then nomnoml is heavily limited I would say. Such things would prevent a wide adoption.
