GUI Unstable in Ubuntu 24.04.3LTS (Wayland) but OK in 22.4.05LTS (X11)?

I'm trying to run DrRacket Version 8 and 9 in Ubuntu 24.04.3LTS (Wayland) via apt/snap/flatpak via the systems respective package managers. The flatpak version of DrRacket takes more than a minute to open up then it is very slow to respond. The snap and apt versions of the app seem to partially works, but takes over 20 seconds to close after I click the close button, as it does not really respond to clicks. I've tried to use the terminal to run it as follows but it still behaves buggy.

It seems to be more stable in an older version of Ubuntu (22.04)

In the newer version, it takes over 20 seconds for the quit confirmation dialogue to come up.
At other times it just quits on its own.

Moving the mouse in and out of the Choose Language alters the dialog design as shown below:

Is Wayland an issue for DrRacket?

I'm running drracket/racket v9 on wayland with sway on archlinux(nvidia 3070) and it's working fine

In the newer version, it takes over 20 seconds for the quit confirmation dialogue to come up.

I think this might be a problem with GTK or the wayland configuration of sorts? It's likely drracket is running on xwayland and not native, so I'd check xwayland configuration

This is not normal. The usual solution is to run raco setup.
This compiles all installed packages including DrRacket.

@mbennette68 Would you be willing to try the latest stable built packages installer from https://download.racket-lang.org/ ?

This would be helpful in determining if both the startup speed and the GUI problem is an issue in Racket and/or DrRacket or if it is a problem with the versions distributed via flatpack/snap

Ok, I installed the following package: racket-9.0-x86_64-linux-buster-cs.sh to a local directory then updated the path in ~/.bashrc. I also moved the drracket.desktop & slideshow.desktop files to ~/.local/share/applications

I tried the following tests:

• Click the icon to start DrRacket, and was able to successfully close it down via the X button before adding anything into the Definitions Window.
• Added something to Definitions Window then clicked Run. This caused the gui to misbehave, essentially takes longer for it to close, sometimes the Close Confirmation Dialog comes up.

I attached the following video (clean close + slow close), but not all errors showed up. It seems to have issues when there is something in the Definitions Window. I'll try to download the source file that was suggested sometime today or tomorrow, but I need instructions on how to compile it or install it.

Ok, so I downloaded the suggested file: racket-9.0-src-builtpkgs

Got the same issues on my Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS. Perhaps my installation is corrupted because
on my Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS inside Virt-Manager, DrRacket works just fine.

I watched the video. The only thing I noticed as odd, was that the memory limit was 128MB.
Try to remove the limit. It's in the menu "Racket" under the menu item "Limit memory ...".

It's probably something else - but still worth a try.

I tried that, the GUI does not respond even with unlimited memory.
I noticed that the Quit Dialog box gets stuck behind the main DrRacket IDE window.
When I try to locate it, bring it to the front it cannot be fully resized, stays partially drawn.
I tested it a few times, but on the last test, it crashed by itself. It also crashes if it thinks that
there is unsafe work that needs to be recovered. I try to delete or recover the lost work, but
the system just hangs and or crashes by itself. When it does this, I notice that a file titled,
'#mredauto#1#' gets deposited in my home directory. Also, the Menu items become
unresponsive. It's probably just my system that's somehow corrupted.

The “Package Manager” dialog in DrRacket is for updating packages within a Racket installation, not for installing a different version of Racket itself.

Also, the “Unix Source with Built Packages” tarball needs to be compiled with ./configure && make before it can be used.

I think it is very likely that your installation may be corrupted somehow. As suggested above, running raco setup with no arguments can fix some problems. If you have multiple installations of Racket on your system, do make sure that the raco command you run is part of the same installation as the drracket command that your .desktop file is using.

If that doesn't solve your problem, we can help you find more details about your installation.

I tried using raco setup but behavior does not change. When the Definitions Window is populated with code and I click the X to close, the Warning for unclosed file comes up, but it hides behind the main IDE window for around 10 seconds, becoming hard to bring forward. So perhaps the OS installation seems to be an issue as well.

After removing the old racket folder, I have used the above commands to compile & install the application in a specific location as shown:

When I try to run drracket from the terminal, I get the error:

drracket
open-input-file: cannot open module file
module path: racket/runtime-config
path: /home/user1/.local/share/Trash/files/racket-9.0-src-builtpkgs/racket-9.0/share/pkgs/compatibility-lib/racket/runtime-config.rkt
system error: no such file or directory; rkt_err=3

For some reason, it's looking at Trash folder. With that being said, running racket actually works
in the terminal.

After that, I ran raco setup and then I got:

It appears to be looking for the collects folder in /home/user1/.local/share/racket/9.0/collects
which I assume is the collects folder inside the actual install directory specified by --prefix.
