Note: Transliteration is the process of writing a word in a different writing system or script such that it sounds the same.

So far we use Natural Earth (NE) place names for zooms 0 to 6 and OpenStreetMap (OSM) for zoom 7 and higher. With the language localization feature coming it might be interesting to bring in more name translations and transliterations that complement NE and OSM. Traditionally, Wikidata has been used as a source of localized names. And today one might think about using large language models (LLMs) to do translations and transliterations.

Let us use this thread as a tracking issue adding more name translations and transliterations...

For Chinese languages, automated transliteration is somewhat possible with the use of a dictionary.
