We'd like to get to know our users. Our goal is to get our users from concept to app store with a full PhoneGap service. Asking for emails will help us identify where users are getting stuck and it also gives us the opportunity to educate our users along the way (introducing them to other products, inviting them to get involved with the community, etc.).
When a user clicks download for the CLI, Desktop app or Developer app - direct them to a page with a sign up form:
Possible text:
"You bring your idea. We'll bring everything else. Sign up and we'll get you from concept to app store in no time!"
"no thanks, I just want to download the software"

I'm cool with us having the goal of capturing email addresses from users who are interested in downloading our tools.
I'm decidedly not cool with the suggested workflow above (user taps/clicks a download link > user's download request is interrupted with a [spammy] request for an email address) as it causes a great deal of (marketing-based) friction during one of the most important (likely initial) experiences a person will have with our product and our team.
So - I'd suggest that the topic of this issue become "Add ability to capture email addresses when a user downloads a tool", thereby allowing for some discovery into how best to approach and design this feature request from a UX perspective.
I think it is worth noting here, we don't explicitly have a hyperlink to download the CLI. Rather, that is done via the command line. In the event that we also want to capture email addresses from the CLI, there is likely some discovery required into how to make this possible.
