Contributors - how best to do it?

I would be appropriate for us to maintain a list of contributors to Haraka projects. Presently, that information lives only in the GitHub repo and web site. It is fine for GitHub users but not so good for everyone else. The most common options are:

• populate the contributors field in package.json
• a CONTRIBUTORS.md file in the repo
• appended to the README

I lean towards putting that data into a file as we have automations that trigger on updates to package.json.

An automated solution that I'd like to see would trigger on merges to master and automatically update the contributor list. It should also have a blacklist that filters out bots (greenkeeper, synk, etc..).
