The next release of Files or possibly the one after that is intended include a limited, optional, preview capability. At the moment it only appears in ColumnView mode but in principle it could be extended to other modes. At the moment it is limited to text, pdf and image mime-types but may be extended later. See #2714. |

One of the features of MacOS that I actually like is the quick preview built into Finder. When a file is selected in the file manager, pressing spacebar will launch a small window rendering the file. It only works for some mimetypes-- text, images, documents, videos, audio, etc.
I know GNOME has something similar for nautilus via a package/service called Sushi. It would be cool if Pantheon's file manager also was able to do something similar.
Not sure if Sushi could he forked or if it is too Nautilus-centric, but that might he a good starting place.
