python update error.

I started seeing the following error when updating homebrew.

brew outdated
[email protected] (3.8.5) < 3.8.6
brew upgrade --cask
Updating Homebrew...
+ brew cleanup
Warning: Skipping [email protected]: most recent version 3.8.6 not installed

What is the issue and how can I resolve it?

reinstalling seems to have fixed it. Not sure why but solved.

Python has been installed as
  /usr/local/bin/python3

Unversioned symlinks `python`, `python-config`, `pip` etc. pointing to
`python3`, `python3-config`, `pip3` etc., respectively, have been installed into
  /usr/local/opt/[email protected]/libexec/bin

You can install Python packages with
  pip3 install <package>
They will install into the site-package directory
  /usr/local/lib/python3.8/site-packages

You never upgraded the formula. You went "what is outdated", "update only the software that is a cask". And python isn't a cask.

brew update
brew outdated
brew upgrade --cask
brew cleanup

should I also use
brew upgrade ?

If you want to upgrade everything you can run brew upgrade, which will also update all eligeble casks.

Yes. [email protected] is a formula not a cask. brew upgrade --cask will only upgrade casks.

brew upgrade or brew upgrade --formula will upgrade [email protected]
