Yes, I agree. When the list was initially compiled, there were no working tor instances. It also would be great to have a tool for discovering such servers, such as The federation, so that we could test new servers and add them to the approved list if they're good.
I'm assuming this is something midov's admin should set up on their side. |

Lack of this tool is the reason I'm looking for information on lists like this ;) Currently, I can only manually try to browse rooms from third party instance and see in my HS logs if it can federate with them. Maybe we should ask Synapse devs to provide a discovery flag somewhere, which would mean the server has started with Tor proxy and it was able to connect with some test onion address. Creating another tool that simply fakes an instance and asks other homeservers to connect with it just to simply ignore further communication might be considered harmful. |

This being said, running an instance for some days can collect a list of successful federations that might be good candidates:

This we can run with:
and get (after manual review):
which may not be a great list, but it's better than none. Another step would be discovering which host room lists, allow registration, etc. There surely exists Matrix API call for these, same with version checks. I wonder why people run Matrix instances without a front page that would at least return HTTP 200. And why does Start9 need so many instances. Maybe I'm just in a bubble and there are other instances outside of it. |

Yes, you can test if registration is enabled with curl if you post to This is a python example, but it can be translated to bash. |

Since v1.84, synapse facilitates onion<->onion federations. It's still from calling "supports", but it works, I've been successfully chatting with other hs users with full anonymity. It would be nice to add a column here for marking such support on each instance (requires a few extra steps I described here: matrix-org/synapse#5152 (comment) ).
As an example (I don't promise this instances will work long-term) I can mention two instances:
baleron3rtjaubsc3vtgcsyrmfmkwdyph3ui2mig7rn3mnfz5ygc4cqd.onion
(no front page, no jurisdiction, secret location, no rules, no privacy policy, in-house registration,1.84.0
as of today)matrix.privacy34kn4ez3y3nijweec6w4g54i3g54sdv7r5mr6soma3w4begyd.onion
(IDK the details)Or at least you should allow incoming Tor federations on Midov, so I could communicate with you via Matrix.
