When adding a linked item such as software you must enter the ID of the item. This should be changed so that there is a drop down list in addition to manually entering the ID.

This way it's an either or

enter the ID, or if the ID is not known you can scroll through a list of that item type

is a good idea. similar to how github does it with issues.
