Thanks @psobolewskiPhD! I was discussing this a bit at the hackathon with @melissawm @jni and @rensutheart . I tried this like a month ago, and due to some of our bespoke make commands this wasn't as simple as a drop-in replacement. The work in #876 is at least a good start in identifying which of our commands "need" the cross platform support.

Up to y'all, I think historically we've kept these sorts of things open to make them easier to find and refer back to; for example, I will regularly trawl open issues to see what can be updated, but not closed ones.

@psobolewskiPhD Let's do this for now. I've created a label "future-consideration" which can be a catch-all for the things that there is no plan to do within the next year but may be useful in the future.
