After using another app that uses the media keys (Such as Instacast) there is no way to get the media keys controlled by chrome again.

If you start playing music in chrome again it doesn't work?

Just going to Google Music after using Instacast doesn’t make the media keys work. However if I quit Instacast, then the media keys start working in Google Music. Re-launching Instacast makes the media keys fail to work in Google Music again.

If you go to google music then start playing something does it start
working again? This is a very tricky thing to get right, apple doesn't
provide a real api for this.

Yeah, I understand. I think this might be instacast specific. After un-toggling the "Enable Apple Media Keys" preference in Instacast, Chrome Media keys works again (while still in the middle of a song playing).

Interestingly, it seems like there are times when something other than Instacast gains control like Quicktime or something (after playing a video) in which I need to toggle that preference in Instacast to get it to regain control.

I've also modified my rcd a la https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2122639?start=270&tstart=0, but I don't think that would affect this.
