Regression in hopper

Problem

The hopper filter doesn't seem to work anymore minetest-mods/hopper#30, and it also crashes when using eject without an output pipe minetest-mods/hopper#31.

Steps to reproduce

Follow steps outlined in upstream issues.

Expected behavior

Hopper filter should work properly and not crash.

For the time being I reverted to 1.7.2 which worked as expected.

I submitted a PR minetest-mods/hopper#32 to correct and improve.
