DirectML in maintenance mode

https://github.com/microsoft/DirectML is in maintenance mode - what does that mean for onnxruntime?

I am quite confused by the information provided on the Microsoft web pages.
The DirectML repository is in maintenance mode. Windows ML is suggested as alternative, but that is "experimental and not supported for use in production environments". While Windows ML also seems to be based on onnxruntime, and the DirectML execution provider.

Can someone clarify the situation?

I found some details in issue #23783 - seems that DirectML is a dead. grr
