@fritzvd introduced this over in MeatDroid but it would probably be useful to have it built-in to the site instead.

i.e. let the user dismiss the sad modal and just watch.

Do we want to enable lurking? I don't know that I want to disable the ability to lurk, because people will always find a way. Currently it's trivial to either delete the sad browser modal or just enable cam and lurk.

I want to encourage active participation, and I think having that either a modal pop up, or seeing the green light of your camera turned on, could possibly help even if in a small way.

What do you think?

Good point. We don't want them to lurk, yes. But maybe we can have like a
pass phrase that our regulars know of, which they can fill in to lurk. Just
to cancel out fomo.

On the other hand, if you can't talk, don't hang around. Everybody hates
that guy at the bar, who listens in to conversation, without really knowing
why he's there, or saying something back.

I am for a lurk mode. Not having a lurk mode means that a new user who's instinct is to not allow camera access to a new site will be faced with the sad browser page, and that puts up a much higher barrier for entry. Also, considering the current mobile situation, I know that some users would like to be able to lurk on their phones with the camera off to conserve battery.

I'm also for a lurk mode. The current "sad browser" message also is a pretty big instant turnoff for people who try to access using iOS -- the app not being updated yet mixed with that message is kind of painful.

When I first came to meatspace I had to lurk for quite a while before I could even tell what was going on, then hours before I both had the courage to send a message and understood the culture enough to say something not 100% idiotic. I think this goes with what @alexchally said, blocking lurkers is a barrier to bringing in awesome new shy meats who don't understand why this blank website wants camera access. I'd love to not turn them away.

+1 for unsupported browser modal dismissal. Also +1 to copy revisions to the modal to better explain what is wrong with the user's life choices in browser/OS.

👍 for modal that actually explains what's going on.
