I am using https://www.ddev.com/ddev-local/ for a while now and it is also docker but its working for every php projects, maybe good alternative to look at.

It works perfectly with all Magento versions and also 2.4.2, you can define the right mysql, mariadb versions also the elastic version per project basis,, for mac it is good but if you are on linux or windows its perfect.

You can also use mutagen or nfs mount: https://github.com/cweagans/ddev-mutagen
