A new version of Laragon is arriving

After nearly two years, Laragon 6 continues to perform excellently with nearly 1 million downloads. I'm dedicated to further improving Laragon. Therefore, a new version of Laragon will be released soon.

Today I gave Laravel Herd a try, and while it's very promising, the lack of MySQL in its free version and $100 annual price tag on the Pro version means I'll be sticking with Laragon for the foreseeable future.

Just a bit of unsolicited advice... In this new version, consider introducing tiered plans: Free, Pro, and Forever.

Draw inspiration from Herd's sleek interface and incorporate MySQL into the Free tier. This alone will set you apart. Then introducing a Pro option with specialized developer tools priced at $50 annually (half the price of Herd), and a Forever plan at $150, could present an attractive proposition to your user base.

If version 6 had 1 million downloads, here are some potential revenue outcomes for the new version:

• If 25% of those users paid $50 a year, that's $12,500,000.
• If 10% of those users paid $50 a year, that's $5,000,000.
• If 5% of users paid $50 a year and another 5% opted for the $150 forever plan, that's $10,000,000.
• If 15% of users paid $50 a year and another 10% opted for the $150 forever plan, that's $22,500,000.

Even charging $5 and $15 you would have enough to never have to work again:

• If 25% of those users paid $5 a year, that's $1,250,000.
• If 10% of those users paid $5 a year, that's $500,000.
• If 5% of users paid $5 a year and another 5% opted for the $15 lifetime plan, that's $1,000,000.
• If 15% of users paid $5 a year and another 10% opted for the $15 lifetime plan, that's $2,250,000.

You've given so much to this community I feel it's only right that you get rewarded. I would be happy to purchase a Forever plan.

I disagree vehemently. The demographic for Laragon is hobbyists (who are individuals with Windows PCs) rather than commercial development shops (who use Linux and who will set up their own infrastructure). You will get more money IMO by making the product truly excellent and asking for donations in return for the benefits people get.

Just a bit of unsolicited advice. Whatever you do, do NOT introduce tiered functionality.

If you want to introduce a tiered licensing which is free for personal or open source use and chargeable for any form of commercial use (commercial company, development of a commercial web site by an individual), then fair enough.

Or instead you could encourage people to contribute, either by spending time improving Laragon code (which requires you to make the Laragon executable more open - if only to scripting support for new server software, new versions or configuring these), improving documentation (the wiki) OR making a voluntary financial contribution - and you can suggest some contribution levels (1% of user development time, 1% of developer salary costs).

But I personally counsel you that whatever you do, do NOT create a free version with less functionality as a paid version as this will risk alienating a proportion of your user base.

I don't know when we get Laragon version 7?

I download the MySQL 8.4 version and place it in Laragon bin/mysql directory but it 8.4 version is not working in Laragon version 6 now we've MySQL version 9 which is not working.

Do something quickly.

IMO people saying "do something quickly" and "time [being] really important" have a pretty darned ungrateful attitudes to take.

@leokhoa has developed Laragon in his own time - and I imagine that a LOT of his time has gone into this - and then made the run-time version available for free for us to use. We have all benefited greatly from this generosity of time, effort and spirit, and if as users we don't like the existing functionality, we have various options other than criticising Leo for lengthy development cycles i.e. we can uninstall Laragon and switch to something different.

My own suggestion (see the Discussion "Moving Laragon along...) is for @leokhoa to start to use a team approach to Laragon development, harnessing the willingness of community members to do a lot of the coding and documentation work.

Yes - I can speak from experience here.

I used Laragon 5 for a while. Then I decided I wanted a reproducible common platform-independent dev environment and spent some time playing with Docker. But in the end I decided that was simply too complicated and tricky - so switched back to Laragon 6.

I was curious about your repo, and since there's no issues or discussions tab... here I go:

1. Apache is not working, something wrong with your install setup. Any ideia why?
   Note that on leokhoa v6, apache works fine.

2. The inno setup doesn't show all the components about to install. ex: we cannot de-select Phyton only
   

3. I played with several PCs. On a win11 it installed the v6lite version, on a Win10 PC it instaled the v6full version. Why?
   Anyway... these issues persisted on both O.S.

Thanks for trying out my repackage version. For now, i purposely keep the discussion close, not wanting the community to split discussion, because my release is not really 'new version' of Laragon. Its mostly updated components.

1. For the first one, may i know on what windows version is this?

try click on setting (gear icon) and tick either one or both, apache / nginx. After that, click start all.

2. Issue no2 is some problem with inno setup component select-box styling, its hidden because the scroll bar not appear.

You can use arrow key to navigate, and use Space bar to check-uncheck the bottom components.

i disabled this styling in the 'beta' release. maybe can give it a try. hopefully this things fixed.

3. And for issue no3, that is how @leokhoa build Laragon. From my earlier tests,
   a. if you install it without Git, it will show Lite.
   b. if Git installed, it will show Full.

try to run the setup again (can be installed on the same directory), and select Git, and see if Lite changes to Full

Leo, I do not want to pressure you but this does not seem to me to be that difficult a concept to think about and make a decision on. We all have time to ponder things like this whilst we are in the shower, on the bus etc.

Win10 & Win11. Like I said, on both OS there's no Apache and not possible to start it from Laragon (also, it's greyd out on preferences).
After a few tests, I just found out that the only way to make Apache work and show-up on Menu, is by choosing Nginx on your innosetup. Weird...

Yes, I confirm that, blindly (arrow+spacebar) we can select individual components. With the help of the following screen, we can make sure we nailed them.

As a general user and just move from XAMPP to Laragon for 2 months, what I want to tell you is it is really really fast and I am very happy. The most important thing is Laragon can allow us to update each components at anytime. Now, I have my Laragon with

• php 8.3.13 and php 7.4.33 at the same time (one website needs 7.4.33 and one needs php above 8.2)
• mySQL 9.1.0
• Apache 2.4.62
• phpadmin 5.2.1
  It is really good enough and I am not in hurry to upgrade to new version. I don't know what further improvement from new version is needed because this version is already too good for me. Thanks Leo

Yes, its possible to upgrade, only Laragon internal update processes itself were kind-of broken.

I love Laragon and I have been using it for almost 4 years now. I love the simplicity it offers and how easy it is to change php, apache and mysql versions on the fly, depending on the project I am working on.

On that note, one thing I would love is to create profiles or environments, bundling settings and versions together. For example, I could have a profile for php8.1, apache 2.42, composer 2.4, etc and another with php8.4, apache 2.56, composer 2.8, etc. (version numbers are random)

This would speed up jumping from one project to another and it would solve various other issues (having multiple versions of composer for example).

Just something to consider for the new version or a later update.
