Auto-update fails silently on Windows Server due to MSI elevation requirements #28364

Description

Environment

  • OS: Windows Server 2025 (Build 26100.3775)
  • Keybase version: 6.5.1-20250422110735+19f9cfeddb
  • Installer type: MSI
  • User has full local admin rights

Problem

When Keybase attempts to auto-update, the updater tries to run the MSI installer without UAC elevation. This causes a silent failure (blocked by Windows), and the main client exits and does not restart.

No error is shown to the user. The update fails, Keybase remains offline until manually reinstalled with elevated rights.

Expected Behavior

Keybase should either:

  • Prompt for UAC elevation during update,
  • Use a service to run elevated, or
  • Fail gracefully and notify the user.

Workaround

Manually launch Total Commander or another file manager as Administrator and reinstall the .msi.

Running .msi in not elevated process fails with "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation."
