Can you elaborate a bit?

yuidoc itself does nothing either in that situation (<- is this what you call "fail silently"?).

What would be the correct behavior for you?

I ran into the same issue. I expected that the gulp task would finish. I would hope to see a warning message that there was nothing to document.
