Channel content quite limited

When viewing channels, the amount of text loaded can be far less than the actual channel content. I can only scroll back about one screen (in half screen increments) worth of prior text. It seems to have something to do with the size of the back_buffer but I've been unable to make a patch to allow loading of more channel content. This is a pretty severe limitation especially on busy channels.
