how can I download the files and start to translate?

The easiest would probably be downloading the ZIP file of the repo from https://github.com/jointhefediverse-net/jointhefediverse.net/archive/refs/heads/main.zip.

You can then make a copy of en-us.json and the en-us folder inside the translations folder, rename them to pt.json and pt respectively, and once the contents are translated, email these to [email protected].
