It is clear that having build logic in buildSrc is an improvement over imperative code directly embedded in a build script or script plugin. Nevertheless, it's not ideal for a few reasons. To start, buildSrc is on the hot path for every build: Gradle must compile it and run its check task (which includes tests) on every single build.
