Not all apps will have menu, Firefox does not export their menus (there’s a patch for arch but I know no workarounds for Ubuntu).

Hello everyone, I attempted to get this working tonight and to the best of my knowledge followed the directions perfectly. Right now Run.sh does absolutely nothing. Can anyone offer my help as I am still noob-ish at Linux and may have unwittingly made a mistake.

Nope, nothing. I checked that I piut everything in the correct place just now as well, everything is where it's supposed to be. Is there another way to run it other than in Terminal?

It may be working... make sure to close and reopen a program with global menu, like gedit.

If you are not getting an error during script execution in the terminal, which means that you are all set, then you have to open any global menu programs like sublime, vscode, gedit etc. and move the cursor to the top of the panel. Because by default, menus hide, but when you move your cursor to the top panel then you can see that.

I'm using Wayland on Manjaro, with the Unite extension also active. The only thing I seem to have the global menu working with is LibreOffice and Visual Studio Code. In those two apps, it stops working as soon as I open a file.

I checked the compatible app list in the Wiki, so I didn't expect Sublime Text or Firefox to work, but it also doesn't work with GIMP or gedit (which are listed as working in the Wiki). I'm also not sure how much Vivaldi diverges from Chrome, but it doesn't work either. I can't think offhand of a Qt 4 or 5 app I have installed to test with.

The main thing I would care about would be Sublime Text, that would be perfect. Seems like there was an additional Arch package I had to install to get Sublime to work with the global menu functionality in KDE Plasma's Active Window Control applet, but I can't recall right now which package that was.

Alt + Space only opens the generic window manager controls menu for me, but I never used the HUD in Unity anyway. The global menu is the main thing I've missed from Unity 7, that's the nicest feature of any DE I've seen in a decade and I've long wished it was a part of the Unite extension.

The problem is probably Wayland, it brokes everything :/. Every once in a while I try to improve it but there’s not much I can do.

For the hud try to run inithud.py and if you want you can assign a shortcut, because Wayland doesn’t allow for global shorcuts.

I know this isn't made for Zorin Os but since it's based of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, any indication on making it work? It comes with Gnome 3.30.2

I'm not getting any errors on the script but I'm getting failed to load extension in the gnome-tweaks

If you feel like it's too much work, just send me your thoughts I can happily look into it, never did any gnome customizations but wouldn't mind getting into it now

If I manage to do something about it I can also make a PR including the changes for 3.30

i tried running run.sh and it gives me this output, i also tried crating the ,gtkrc-2.0 file and it created is as an text file, i think this may have something to do with this output.

It works for me under wayland, but since I installed this extension, the Ubuntu Appindicator extension is crashing at startup (it works if I disable and enable it after startup).
I'm on PopOS 20.10, and I'm using this extension along with the Unite Extension. Ubuntu Appindicator crashes even if I disable every other extension now, so I'm not really sure what happened.

This program and Ubuntu AppIndicators use the same DBus server. Just a curious question, why use that if you have Unite?

Hello, I'm kind of new to Linux and I just can't seem to properly install the extension. I'm running Ubuntu 20.04. Are my steps wrong?

install the required modules and python dependency
create ~/.gtkrc2.0 and append gtk-modules="appmenu-gtk-module"
add gtk-modules="appmenu-gtk-module" under [Settings] in ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini
copy the [email protected] folder into ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions
copy the repo to ~/Desktop (which is a completely arbitrary choice)
I then enabled the extension in the extensions app after rebooting. But when I try to run ~/Desktop/Fildem-master/run.sh, the terminal shows me the following error

Hi! Anaconda it’s not needed. Try with this: sudo apt install python3-gi python3-gi-cairo gir1.2-gtk-3.0

I know it's not needed but I have it installed for college related purposes.
I tried uninstalling anaconda, re-doing the steps and it worked, so it seems to be some sort of incompatibility with anaconda as thought. Would be great to make the extension compatible with anaconda in some manner... I will try reinstalling anaconda with the extension working and see what happens.

I got one problem left, though. The item selected doesn't match with the drawing menu, as if the global menu that is showing isn't the actual menu that really draws the items. Is there a way I can fix it?

Yeah, ’cause it isn’t the actual menu :/. Long story. But try to change MIN_PADDING and NAT_PADDING there.

That error seems to be because of Wayland. Virtual Box works for me. Chrome seems to sudenly stop working, I’m gonna check that.

I wrote earlier that the extension does not work in gnome 40 alpha, so I found a solution, error: Unexpected token in the MyProxy class. Syntax error. either there is no support for asynchronous methods, or otherwise arrange the class code (I am not a programmer and I do not know how to do this). in the meantime, so that at least somehow it worked, I removed async from the code of the MyProxy class and added support for gnome 40 to metadata.json, and it worked for me.

It’s seems to work out of the box on gnome 40 (it’s a lottery, they worked on the workspaces and dash, the panel was unaffected, lucky me). I will have to redesign the prefs though. It works with the async.

I have installed the global menu correctly, but I still want to confirm that the terminal output text is like this?
And when I add run.py to the self-starting list and restart the computer, the global menu cannot be clicked after a period of time, and other parts of the top bar options cannot be clicked. What is the problem?
However, after deleting the self-starting option, restarting the computer and opening the terminal to run, the above problem will not occur after using for a long time. What is the reason?

Okay, I don't know if the script is running in the background due to the self-starting caused an error. Because it is running in the background, it is impossible to read the output of the script. But everything is normal when the foreground terminal program is running.

Maybe the README is outdated. If you installed the app using the packages run it with fildem not run.py.

I thought I had it working but from time to time it stop responding on clicks. I realised it happens when I open and try to use the menu with a gtk3 apps. When use gtk2 apps like gimp and transmission it works fine but when I open gtk3 app like gedit it stop responding on clicks for all apps even gtk2. So if I wanna use gimp or inkscape I must restart and not use anything else. I can select through the menu with the arrow keys when it happens but pressing enter it does not respond. When I try launch fildem in terminal I get this

i just installed your extension on Ubunt 22.04 LTS but i´m getting Gtk errors, and the Extension doesnt show up in the Gnome Tweak Tools.
I have to start the application manually after a reboot and get these error / logs in my terminal after starting :

...

if i let the extension run and just use my pc more msg. pop up in the terminal
as far as i know i added all nec. / prompted files during the install / setup

do you have any suggestions what might cause the problem?

I'm running Zorin OS 16.2. I followed your guide, but the menu just doesn't want to appear. It is enabled, and the fildem hud app appears, but when I click on it, nothing. Not sure what is wrong, and I am a bit of a Linux noob.

no you'll have to use another app for mailbox aur compile a patched, idk how to do it on ubuntu but you can do ez on Arch....
and as for the app & the menu not be synchronized idk what that issue is.. the app needs to selected for the menu to show..

no firefox & thunderbird can't be used because they doesn't export the menu. you can either use an alternative like KMail or compile the software with appmenu patch.. Now know how to do that on arch linux but for ubuntu you might need to do some research here the link for Arch Linux..
