You can definitely do rounded corners, you just have to do them manually with two points :-D
Are you familiar with the border radius tool in Illustrator? I think that may be a good control to think about for this idea.
Overall, this is kind of a not-very-common scenario in typeface design, even though it is common in graphic design (Like CSS) so I'm not sure how to prioritize this. Thanks for the idea, though!
