Support for IPFS could help both mitigate the burden of storage, and distribution, while also potentially benefiting users that are more remote (by allowing local peers to help share images). An example of IPFS support for OCI images can be found in the nerdctl project.
The expected result would be native backend support for IPFS/IPNS links to images and layers to be served by the http server. The other feature would be for IPFS/IPNS enabled clients to allow for direct passing of links to the client for them to manage locally.
