Client.request raises runtime error: "Attempted to send an async request with a sync Client instance."

This seems somewhat related to #2339.

When making a POST request using a simple Client instance, I'm presented with a runtime error.

from httpx import Client
     
client = Client(base_url="http://localhost:11434")

def test_request_method():
    with client as c:
        response = c.request(
            method="POST",
            url="/api/chat",
            json={
                "model": "gemma2",
                "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Hello!"}]
            }
        )
        return response

res = test_request_method()

This raises RuntimeError: "Attempted to send an async request with a sync Client instance.", which to me is totally unexpected. What am I missing here?
