Changing the icon in tabs to a non glyphicon icon

I would like to know how could I change the icon of the round tabs if I didn't want to use glyphicon and use an image in my web folder? I tried creating a new class with a background-url set to the image I wanted but got an empty round circle. Would greatly appreciate any help on this matter.
