New to Linux, cant get past the first step

I am unable to install/run crouton

You have to make crouton executable. I don't know whst you mean by "can't get past the first step". What is happening? Any error messages? You didn't provide enough information to offer some sort of assistance.

Just so you know, crouton appears to be broken for current releases of ChromeOS, so if you really need Linux, you'll need to install Crostini or dual boot using the firmware patch from MrChromebox.
