To be clear, I mean the red underline that appears when you spell a word wrong, and when you tap on the word, you get suggestions.

Right now the only way I've found to get an open source spellcheck on thumb-key, is to install florisboard, which then tasks you with downloading an add-on for firefox and importing it into florisboard, and then using florisboard as the spellchecker. This mostly works, although it has some problems (such as words with n't all appearing as incorrect, I believe this has to do with the autocorrect on ' code, but i'm not sure)

It would be nice to not have to install both florisboard and thumb-key just to have an open source spellchecker, plus i'm pretty sure the code could be taken directly from florisboard.

android does this itself, at least for many of my apps

No it does not, it's just very hidden functionality that by default, utilizes your default keyboard

Where exactly the functionality of your spellchecker is set depends on your phone, but for example, on my phone, if you run a search in the settings for "spelling correction"

For me this is set to samsung keyboard by default. I assure you this exists on your android version if you hunt down the setting.

Unfortunately I believe using the default spellchecker means that everything you type gets sent to samsung/whatever your manufacturer is, so, I make sure it's set to florisboard.

Good to know, sorry. Looks like ASOP does it differently. Perhaps we could also check out that implementation.

@Kommynct if you know someone with it maybe try this

  1. Install Amaze file manager on theirs
  2. On left choose App manager
  3. On top right choose … button and tick Show system apps
  4. Go to the android spell checker in the list and tap its … button and select backup

Now you have an apk… Installation success may be dependent on android compatibility…
My spell checker list is blank
