Dynamic linking of PHP Interpreter ? #464

I haven't had the time to try out static-php-cli yet.
I have several microservices built on Swoole. I would like to make an .so file of static-php-cli that all my microservices would load when running the binary - such that the static-php-cli shared library is only taking up space once in the file system - as opposed to statically linking php and/or extensions into the binary of each microservice.

Is this possible using static-php-cli ?

How would I compile each microservice to achieve this ?

UPDATE: we will have glibc-based static php after #592 merged. And also, added libphp.so support!

Hmm think so I imagine something like:

/usr/bin/microservice1 (First microservice binary)
/usr/bin/microservice2 (Second microservice binary)
/usr/lib/libphp.so

so to distribute/move microservice1 to another host, I would simply copy /usr/lib/libphp.so and /usr/bin/microservice1 (and maybe some PHP extension .so files as well) but the point is that the PHP interpreter (libphp.so) would only be on each host once

Contrast this to:
/usr/bin/microservice1 (First microservice binary + statically linked libphp.so in same binary)
/usr/bin/microservice2 (Second microservice binary + statically linked libphp.so in same binary)

The latter would take up way too much space because each microservice would have it's own libphp.so statically linked in ?

It's possible to build embed SAPI (libphp.so) directly using static-php-cli, just replace --enable-embed=static with --enable-embed=shared, and compile with --build-embed. After build you can find libphp.so under source/php-src/libs/ directory.

But I haven't tested with dynamic linking with libphp.so compiled by static-php-cli and only tested on macOS. I will make these (sapi building args) as dynamic env variables (e.g. SPC_ARGS_PHP_EMBED_ENABLE="--enable-embed=shared") if you are going to test it.

I haven't had the time to try out static-php-cli yet. I have several microservices built on Swoole. I would like to make an .so file of static-php-cli that all my microservices would load when running the binary - such that the static-php-cli shared library is only taking up space once in the file system - as opposed to statically linking php and/or extensions into the binary of each microservice.

Is this possible using static-php-cli ?

How would I compile each microservice to achieve this ?

Using the same container image in the runtime environment

How can I change the ./bin/spc build "openssl,pcntl,mbstring" --debug --build-embed
line such that certain (proprietary) extensions are build from another ext directory (have 3-4 proprietary extensions)

Sorry for late reply. Here's my local testing result:

macOS: Successfully compiled libphp.so and works well.
Linux: Same error collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status, seems openssl library does not support this trick. We need to dig deeper.

For linux, even if we not include openssl extension, with successful build, we still can't use it with other C programs (libc.so not found problem). This part is quite complex for Linux and I might need some time to debug it.

I haven't done any research on dynamic links recently. But I will write some docs about it. There are many ways to build Linux, but it is not easy to build so many libraries in this way at the same time.

Does this mean that what I described here would be possible (ie. a shared libphp.so that each binary loads dynamically). If that is indeed the case, I am very much excited about it, but I fail to see exactly how to do it ? In other places you mention a docker container ?

Please elaborate on how to do this ?

You can follow the new doc section about GNU libc based static binary. And also, change env.ini: SPC_CMD_VAR_PHP_EMBED_TYPE="static" to "shared". And then build your combination with command bin/spc-gnu-docker build --libc=glibc XXX. You will get buildroot/lib/libphp.so as expected.

Yes but once I have the libphp.so and I write the PHP microservice1 (which will be loading libphp.so) how do I compile/build the microservice1 (using SPC ?) (as mentioned in an earlier reply of mine) in such a way that it will become an ELF binary that loads the libphp.so and then executes my PHP file ? I might have overlooked something ?

There seem to be a lot of issues on your host container. curl downloads fail to missing certs, git is not installed, etc.

I'm not going to denug your individual environment. The steps I've listed work fine on a fresh RHEL/Ubuntu after running spc doctor and installing docker-ce.

Now I did what you said and the result is above.
I do have git and I do have certificates on the host (And the host is running Ubuntu 20.04)... But how do I get the libphp.so file ?

Steps:

git clone https://github.com/crazywhalecc/static-php-cli

cd static-php-cli

composer install

// add the following line to ./bin/spc-gnu-docker:

echo 'SPC_CMD_VAR_PHP_EMBED_TYPE="shared"' >> /tmp/spc-gnu-docker.env

chmod +x ./bin/spc-gnu-docker

./bin/spc-gnu-docker download --for-extensions="intl"

./bin/spc-gnu-docker build "intl" --enable-zts --build-embed

// profit, built in ./buildroot/lib/libphp.so

like described here

I discovered that I am on PHP 8.2 and the new static php cli version requires PHP 8.4 (so composer fails)
