String values vs identifiers in GDC data dictionary (Question for GDC)

For the fields that have string-based values, such as disease_type or primary_diagnosis, are there any other identifiers stored in the data? Or are they stored simply as strings?

They are stored as strings. There are no additional identifiers stored in the back-end. Also, apologies for missing these questions for several months.
