Azure ExpressRoute

Azure ExpressRoute is a dedicated, private network connectivity service that allows you to establish a fast, reliable, and secure connection between your on-premises infrastructure and Azure. It bypasses the public internet, providing lower latency, higher bandwidth, and more consistent network performance than typical VPN connections. Here's a comprehensive overview:

Private, Dedicated Connection

ExpressRoute provides a private, dedicated connection between your on-premises infrastructure and Microsoft's global network. This ensures that your data does not traverse the public internet, reducing exposure to potential threats and providing a more secure and reliable connection.

Improved Performance

ExpressRoute offers lower latency and higher bandwidth compared to public internet-based connections like VPNs. This enables you to transfer large volumes of data quickly and efficiently, which is crucial for scenarios like data migration, replication, or backup and restore operations.

Redundancy and High Availability

Azure ExpressRoute offers built-in redundancy and high availability through dual circuits, ensuring a reliable connection between your on-premises infrastructure and Azure. Connectivity Models

Bandwidth and Scalability

ExpressRoute offers multiple bandwidth options, ranging from 50 Mbps to 10 Gbps, allowing you to choose the appropriate capacity for your needs. You can also scale your connection up or down based on your requirements and usage patterns.

Metered and Unlimited Data Plans

Azure ExpressRoute offers both metered and unlimited data plans. Metered plans charge based on the data transfer, while unlimited plans offer a fixed monthly fee for unlimited data transfer. This enables you to choose a pricing model that aligns with your usage patterns and budget.

Monitoring and Diagnostics

Azure Monitor and Network Performance Monitor (NPM) can be used to monitor the performance, availability, and health of your ExpressRoute connections. These tools provide visibility into your network performance and help you identify and troubleshoot issues in real-time.
