wayvnc 1920x1080 session takes up to ~70mbit/s of bandwidth

Useful information:

A 1920x1080 wayvnc session is taking up ~30mbit/s to ~70mbit/s of bandwidth at all times in my local network, which seems perhaps excessive and likely to overly load older computers; I tried running with --gpu hoping for some efficient encoding to kick in but it didn't seem to make a difference.

Command line is:

wayvnc/build/wayvnc -k us_intl 0.0.0.0 -L warning -v --gpu

Somehow despite the logging params I'm not getting anything printed on connection, just an early warning about deleting a stale control socket path. Will capture and attach a trace next.

• Is it expected that wayvnc will take up so much bandwidth? Can this be tuned in some way? Maybe this is a reasonable default in good networks but I could imagine it being an issue in older setups.
• Which parameters could I try to customize this behavior, if any are available and not documented in --help, or which are planned? Could people help in any way? Thank you!

I'm connecting with Remmina through a local wireless network.

The bandwidth utilisation depends on the frame rate and the encoding chosen by the client.

If you're using TigerVNC, you can change encoding/compression by selecting "Options" before connecting and you'll be greeted with this menu:

Select H.264 for best compression. That only works with the --gpu option though. Second best compression would be "Tight" with "Allow JPEG Compression" selected.

You can also play with compression level (for lossless compression) or quality (for lossy compression). Quality changes compression level for both Tight and H.264.

If you select any other compression method, the compression can be improved using the "Color level" which changes how many colour there are in an encoded pixel. If you set this to anything below "Full", your colour palette will be reduced. The only advantage of doing this instead of using H.264 or JPEG is that there will be no DCT compression artifacts such as ringing or blurriness.
