Add updated Socioeconomic and Demographic Dataset (ACS 2023)

Description

In our OSCUR Hugging Face repo we currently provide a Socioeconomic and Demographic dataset using ACS 2008–2012 profiles, which include population, housing, labor force, and social statistics. While useful, this dataset is outdated.

Request to add a new dataset based on the 2023 American Community Survey (ACS) release:

⚠️ Important: We do not want to remove the existing ACS 2008–2012 dataset. Both versions should be kept, so researchers can choose between them depending on whether they want historical baselines or the most recent data for their analysis.

Implementation

The process to retrieve this data should be similar to the approach used for the ACS 2008–2012 dataset. Since it is not available in NYC Open Data, we need to:

1. Retrieve the data directly from the provided URL.
2. Extract the Excel files.
3. Combine the tables (population, housing, labor force, and social statistics) into a unified dataset.

Versioning / Naming Convention

To avoid confusion, we should add a clear naming scheme for each dataset. For example:

• socioeconomic_demographic_ACS2008_2012
• socioeconomic_demographic_ACS2023

This will make it easier for users to distinguish between datasets when performing analysis.
