By running
applyPatchwithout cloning theoldVariants,applyPatchwould patch theoldVariantsby reference, effectively making them the same as thenewVariants. This fixdeepClones the oldVariants when sending them in as anapplyPatchparameter so that theoldVariantsvariable is left untouched.
