植存需在屬於政府劃定的特定綠化地點埋葬骨灰或拋灑，與灑葬（樹葬、花葬等）的差異在地點的差別，植存必需在「公墓外」的政府指定地點，如新北市金山環保生命園區等地。在過程中，家屬可以用花瓣代替冥紙，相對上較一般喪葬模式環保許多。

樹葬則根據《殯葬管理條例》第二條第十款定義：指於公墓內將骨灰藏納土中，再植花樹於上，或於樹木根部周圍埋藏骨灰之安葬方式稱為樹葬，由此可見兩者最大差異在於執行地點的不同。

可依照自家信仰方式來祭祀，比如家中仍然可設立神主牌位祭拜，拜拜形式不受影響，只是清明掃墓時，因為植存沒有實際墓地或是塔位，對於家屬來說，慎終追遠形式就要稍作改變，可以改為在家中或是植存地點相聚追思的方式，但請遵守園區規定，不能焚香祭拜。
